Lolita’s Personality
Macaws are great companion birds. They are intelligent and affectionate. These birds do best with well-rounded families. They can get bored easily and will find other ways to entertain themselves if their owners do not interact with them enough. Macaws who aren't properly socialized may become aggressive and may even bite. It is essential to establish clear boundaries so the macaw does not feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds that enjoy playing, climbing and play. They require 2 to 3 hours each day outside their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks and listening to music. They love going to playgrounds and parks as much as local restaurants and bars. Apart from being a great pet, they are also great companions for children.
These birds can be very loud, despite their affection for them. They can also be a nuisance for those living nearby. They can be heard making ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which could be a problem in condos and apartments or in close proximity to children who might be scared by their noise.
Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means males and females are difficult to tell apart. This is why DNA testing is the only method of determining the sex. Once the bird's sex is determined the breeding process can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to master commands and phrases. Lolita's care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to cease performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped Lolita could suffer a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to go back to the ocean.
The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They are a danger to her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they place her in a tiny tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her a relative, on a plan to eventually transport her to open water. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast, where she could spend the rest of her days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals who bond with their families until they die. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. Many activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her retirement from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

After graduating Lolita's Teacher Training Program, you will be prepared to teach The Pilates Method anywhere on the planet! Lolita's Diet

The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she is eating about 115 pounds of salmon, capelin, herring, and squid per day.
Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita, has been criticized over the quality of food that they feed to killer whales. The 57-year-old orca was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and even though the species is endangered in the wild, she is in an aquarium that many consider too small for her.
Lolita's Health
Lolita is beautiful, however her health is declining. She has been a source of concern for animal welfare groups who wish to see her released to the wild. These updates reveal that Toki is aging rapidly and her health has deteriorated.
It is unclear what specific health issues are affecting the orca, as her captor isn't obliged to disclose this information. However, a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is often a factor in the deaths of orcas kept in captivity.
